How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. (Prov. 6:9-11)
The slogan “work hard, play hard” has some truth beyond its popular use meaning “work to live, not live to work.” When we put our minds and bodies to the test through hard work and real exertion of energy, the quality of our rest and sleep will improve. That is why a healthy regimen of physical exercise is important, even essential, to a healthy mental state. Ecclesiastes says, “Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much…”
The sluggard is addicted to rest and moreover, to a passive state of existence. Such a disposition, Proverbs tells us, will surely lead to financial ruin. As stewards of the resources God has given us, financial or physical, these resources are under our care to actively make decisions that impact both our own happiness and more importantly, God’s work in a broken world.
Resist the temptation to embrace leisure and rest for their own sake! They were not intended as the end goal of life. Rather, rest well after living well, and living well finds its home in the realm of active thought and engagement in God’s world.

Literacy Megacourse Offered Summer 2024
This coming summer, DIU is offering its Literacy Megacourse. Consisting of nine graduate credit hours, this course prepares students to do literacy in contexts having little or no tradition of literacy, no instructional materials exist and where there may or may not even be an alphabet.
