Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. (Psalm 143:8)
My friend and I were driving on an unfamiliar highway having just crested the summit and descending into what looked like a red cloud. That was 1983. The highway Interstate 5, and we were on the “grapevine” pass. We were headed to college in Southern California. The cloud was air pollution. Coming from a small, pristine town in Central Oregon, I was in instant culture shock for most of my college career. I didn’t know air came in so many colors! This verse from Psalm 143 became my life verse and I have recited it innumerable times, especially when I faced doubt or uncertainty about what comes next. The second half is clear enough; it is a plea for God’s help. The first half is all about reassurance for a weary soul. At times, we need to know that God is there and that his character and his love is at work in the world. I ask for a revelation of his presence, and he never fails to provide it.
Recently, we celebrated Fall baccalaureate for those graduating with either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. Congratulations on all your hard work and commitment to take your education seriously, to persevere and to grow personally. May you enjoy the fruit of your many hours of study and learning. As you move into your next place in life and face new decisions and challenges, remember this verse from Psalm 143. God is faithful to direct your steps and give you the assurance that he is working in your life!
