“No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” (Mark 2:22)
The English language is historically divided into English (aka, Anglo-Saxon), Middle English, Late-Middle English and Modern English. The word gospel, for example, comes from Old English around 500 AD and it is made up of two parts, god ‘good’ plus spel ‘story’. The gospel is a good-story, or more popularly coined, good news! The majority of Christian vocabulary comes from Old English as this was a time of great expansion of Christianity from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia. The “good story” about God’s deliverance was also a new story because it provided a message of spiritual renewal regardless of political structures, ethnicity, language or social class. Jesus’ words in Mark 2 should constantly remind us that our relationship to God through Christ starts as an act of God who made a way for us to be his sons and daughters through faith. As new and transformed people, our old ways and habits no longer carry any merit; what matters is God’s forgiveness of our sins-this is truly a good and timeless story!
Our summer term is ending in just a few weeks. Let’s be praying for our students as they are working on their research projects and preparing for finals. And thank you to our faculty who are teaching this summer while also getting ready for fall classes. They will be here in just a little over a month!
Paz,
Scott
