  20 Years Strong

It all started with a handful of pre-field training classes. In the early 1970s, the Summer Institute of Linguistics established a training program in Dallas, through a cooperative agreement with the University of Texas at Arlington, for people interested in participating in the Bible translation movement. This has grown into what we now know as Dallas International University, with the mission to provide training and research opportunities leading to degrees in applied linguistics, culture studies, and development of languages. We have always been a Christ-centered, student-focused institution of higher education with a special calling to equip men and women to cross language and culture barriers with the Word of God.

The journey has not always been easy, but God has always been faithful. Just last month, DIU celebrated our 20th anniversary in the Event Center, where several hundred people gathered to praise God together for how He has moved in the past and how He continues to move.

As we look ahead, we pray that God will continue to grant us favor as He always has, and we dream of what our future will look like. Our prayer, as outlined in IMPACT2024, is to:

  • Pour 1,000 well educated workers into the Bible translation and Great Commission movements in the next five years.
  • Grow our programs even more with a PhD in translation consulting and a new MA or MA concentration in Human Migration.
  • Provide students with more of the necessary facilities and technology to enhance their education.
  • Create additional office space for faculty and staff.
  • Increase student aid: Our goal is to add $50,000 a year to our endowed scholarship funds as well as to raise significant scholarship funds each year for immediate use.
  • Grow our faculty and staff in order to serve more students.

Dallas International University has been a forerunner in the Bible translation training movement since 1999. We are so grateful for the partnerships and presence of people like you as we celebrate 20 years of continuing our mission. Time and again, God has proven His faithfulness, and we will continue to be faithful to Him in return through our work. It’s not over yet, and we look forward to seeing His hand guide, direct, and provide in the years to come.

DIU President, Dr. Doug Tiffin                                                          DIU President Emeritus, Dr. David Ross                                        SIL Executive Director, Dr. Michel Kenmogne

Last month, DIU hosted the grand opening for our brand-new Student Life Center. We are so excited that God has provided a place where students can gather, study, and build community together. In the Student Life Center, we now have a conference room, a game area, several study areas, two large TVs, and a small cafe, as well as space for families with young children to come and relax. Many thanks to the International Linguistics Center and generous people like you for helping to make this dream a reality.

Where Are They Now!

Mike Neterer

Mike Neterer finished his course work at DIU in the spring of 2018 and returned to Minnesota, where he runs SALT, Somali Adult Literacy Training, a program of Arrive Ministries, with 192 volunteers serving in 19 locations. Mike oversees this multifaceted program to empower Somali refugees with English language skills and education so they can thrive in America. In addition, Mike also worked with Somali youth leaders to expand and publish (using Dictionary App Builder, which he learned to use in his Field Data Management class) a dictionary for their indigenous language, which is now being used back in Somalia and in the global diaspora.

On behalf of our President, Dr. Doug Tiffin, we would like to thank all of our alumni who responded to the challenge to give $100 a year for the next three years. Your gifts of more than $2,000 so far is helping provide scholarships and subsidies for faculty salaries. You are a part of training those who will join you and come after you!
