In the new country of East Timor, a quiet but vigorous debate is taking shape over language policy in education. Some favor Portuguese, a remnant of 500 years of colonization. Others favor Dili Tetun, a creole language of growing influence. The more daring even talk of English, another language whose influence in the country is spreading.
