AL 5333 Tone Analysis
6 April – 1 June 2018 (Session 4), Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 1:25-3:00 p.m.
Instructor: Dr. Michael Cahill
Did you get that tone right? Over half the world’s languages are tonal – are you prepared?
Only offered every other year, students will learn basic behavior of tone in the world’s languages, practice on hearing tone and examining it with Speech Analyzer, organizing and managing tone data, linguistic theory for how to analyze tone, tone in orthographies, and a written project in which the student describes the tonal system of a language (data supplied).
Most classroom contact hours are concentrated in the first half of the course, with the second half being individual project work.
