Our Unique Mission

Since its founding in 1998, Dallas International University has become the ‘gold standard’ – a truly unique institution with a unique mission to prepare global leaders to partner with local communities around the world.

DIU is a student–focused institution with a special calling to prepare our students to give their lives in service to the marginalized people of the world. A large number of Dallas International University alumni serve as literacy workers, language surveyors, ethnomusicologists, Bible translators and cross-cultural workers in a variety of other fields.

1972-1998 Texas SIL

1972-1998

Dallas International University has a rich history dating back to 1972 when Texas SIL classes commenced. When SIL decided to seek accreditation for this training, it discovered that a new and separate institution would be required.
1998-2018 Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics

March 31, 1998

The founding of Dallas International University under our original name, the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics. Dr. David Ross serves as first president.

1999

Dallas International University welcomes first students as the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics.

2000

First graduating class

2005

Dallas International University is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to grant MA degrees.

2011

Abraham Center begins offering courses.

2012

MA with a major in World Arts launched

2013

BA degree approved by SACSCOC

2014

W.W. Caruth III Endowed Scholarship established.

2015

Center for Excellence in World Arts established.

2015

MA with a major in Islamic Studies launched

2016

Library remodel completed using funds from a Hillcrest Foundation grant.

2017

Dr. Douglas Tiffin appointed as president.

2017

Hillcrest Foundation grant for technology upgrades

received

2018-Present Dallas International University

2018

Name change approved.  The Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics becomes Dallas International University.

2018

PhD in World Arts approved by SACSCOC.

May 2019

Hillcrest Foundation grant for classroom technology upgrades received

The Eduard Alekseyev Endowed Scholarship for World Arts established

Dr. Scott Berthiaume becomes DIU’s third president.
