Dr. Stephen Quakenbush serves with SIL International Language Services as Director of Strategic Initiatives. Immediately preceding this assignment he was Global Scripture Access Director, and prior to that he held the position of Academic Services Director. Since 2010 Dr. Quakenbush has been a board member of Dallas International University (formerly GIAL) in Dallas, Texas. His other experience includes having been Director for SIL Philippines and also Academic Coordinator for SIL in Asia.
Beyond his native English, Dr. Quakenbush speaks Filipino, Agutaynen, and Spanish. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy, Linguistics degree from Georgetown University and was active as a Georgetown Teaching Fellow.
He is interested in language documentation in Austronesian languages. He has been a board member of the Linguistics Society of the Philippines and is an editorial advisor for Philippine Journal of Linguistics. A member of the Linguistics Society of America and the Philippine Bible Society, he has taught in linguistics programs in Oklahoma, Texas, and North Dakota, as well as in Singapore and Manila, Philippines. He was active in the Agutaynen Bible translation project over 20 years to create a New Testament (launched in 2004).
Dr. Quakenbush is married and has four children. In their ministry the Quakenbushes have lived in a number of bamboo houses designed by Janice, Stephen’s wife.
