“In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.” (Luke 1:5–7, ESV)
The Bible reminds us that it is never too late to learn. Luke tells the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, a couple who longed for a family but were unable to have children. As they grew older, they had likely lost hope of ever having a child of their own. Yet, even in the midst of that disappointment, their lives reflected goodness and righteousness. Zechariah faithfully served as a Jewish priest.
One day, an angel announced to Zechariah that Elizabeth would bear a son who would become John the Baptist—the one chosen to announce the coming of the Messiah. What a learning experience they were about to begin! They would become new parents, taking on the responsibility of nurturing and guiding little John as he grew into the man God had called him to be. Some might have said this came too late in life, but God’s plan is always right on time.
Next week marks the beginning of our Fall Term. With it comes new learning and, for our new students, an entirely new experience. There will be schedules to juggle, homework to complete, and a dozen other things to manage—all of it is part of God’s wonderful plan to grow, shape, and prepare us.
