I enjoy using public transportation to get to work. I leave the house around 6:30 a.m. to catch a bus that takes me to the train station, where I board for a 20-minute ride. From there, I take a “Quick Link” to arrive at Dallas International. The entire trip takes about an hour and a half.
In a culture where speed and efficiency are highly valued, what makes this kind of journey enjoyable to me?
The people.
Today, for example, I was sitting on the bus next to a gentleman, and we struck up a conversation. He is a born-again Christian who shared God’s faithfulness in his victory over drug addiction many years ago. Hearing his story of God’s miraculous work lifted my spirit. It was a direct application of my Bible reading for the day.
The surprises.
The transition from bus to train is always unpredictable. On a good day, my train is running just late enough that I have time to grab a latte at Corner Bakery. It gives me something to look forward to. I’ve learned that hope itself is a gift from God—even something as simple as an unexpected hot latte in the morning.
The music.
On my walk to the bus stop, I pass a 7-Eleven car wash. The owner plays classical music at full volume—even at 6:30 in the morning! It’s a refreshing way to begin the day, a public expression of beauty as the morning unfolds.
At chapel last week, I shared how life is full of surprises—some welcome, others not. Yet in each one, there is both a blessing and a lesson. In His faithfulness, God reveals those truths to us.
