Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)
This week, DIU will celebrate its 27th Commencement Exercises. Students from undergraduate through doctoral levels will walk across the stage in recognition of the hard work and perseverance required to complete their degrees.
The term commencement (lit. “to begin”) is fitting because these individuals are entering a new stage of life after years devoted to academic learning. Truthfully, high-level learning requires thousands of hours of practice under competent mentorship in order to develop the mental and practical abilities needed to become proficient in a discipline. This is true not only in the collegiate environment, but in every field of life. When formal learning concludes, a new journey begins—or commences—as graduates apply their learning in service through a new profession and calling.
The Bible also speaks of the need for our minds to be renewed. Through the careful study of God’s Word and the influence of righteous teachers, we learn to discern what is spiritually beautiful and good. At DIU, many qualified and honorable faculty members have affirmed that these graduates have demonstrated such discernment and growth. May God use these new graduates mightily as a rich blessing to all those they encounter as they commence this new season of life.
